Celestial Stakeout: Perseids Meteor Shower
Join Maria Mitchell Association professional astronomers and staff for a special evening celebrating the peak of the annual Perseids Meteor Shower at Loines Observatory (59 Milk Street Extension, Nantucket, MA 02554).
The Perseids are one of the year's most spectacular celestial events, producing bright, fast-moving meteors that can reach rates of 50–100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. The shower is also known for its brilliant fireballs—exceptionally bright meteors that leave long, glowing trails across the night sky.
Throughout the evening, guests will enjoy guided viewing with MMA astronomers, who will share the science behind the Perseids and help visitors explore the summer night sky. This program is designed to be engaging for adults and children of all ages.
Please dress appropriately for the evening weather, as temperatures can become cool after sunset. While seating is available around the observatory grounds, you are welcome to bring a blanket for additional comfort if you wish.
All registered children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Pre-registration is required, as space is limited. Registration closes at 8:00 PM on the night of the program.
Location: Loines Observatory, 59 Milk Street Extension, Nantucket, MA 02554
In the event of inclement weather, the program will be cancelled, and all registered participants will be notified.
