NMC 2017 Rising Stars Showcase Recital: Morgan Flanigan

Morgan Flanigan, 17, began her piano studies at the age of seven and has studied with Chiharu Naruse since 2010. During the 2016-2017 school year, Morgan enjoyed participating in the piano seminar at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School in Boston. She won the 2017 Young Stars of Maine Elsie Bixler Junior Prize, 2016 Maine High School Concerto Competition, 2015 Young Stars of Maine A. H. Chatfield, Jr. Piano Prize, and the 2015 USM Youth Ensembles Scholarship Competition. In 2015, Morgan won 2nd prize in her age category at the International Music Competition in Stockholm, Sweden and performed at Merkin Concert Hall in New York as part of the Long Island Conservatory Soloist Competition Winners’ Concert. She was awarded Kotzschmar Memorial Scholarships in 2017, 2015, and 2014. Besides piano, Morgan also studied violin with Yasmin Vitalius for six years. Morgan enjoyed participating in the Maine All-State Orchestra in 2016 and was Assistant Concertmaster of the 2015 Maine All-State Orchestra. She has also participated in the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra, DaPonte String Quartet Workshop, and Wescustago Youth Chorale. During the summer of 2015, Morgan participated in the Bowdoin International Music Festival, and in the summer of 2017, she participated in the Piano Institute and Seminar at the Atlantic Music Festival. This fall, she is a homeschooled senior in high school and plans to study piano performance in college. Although from Maine, Morgan has always enjoyed Nantucket in the summertime. When not involved in musical activities, Morgan enjoys skiing, running, crocheting, and Nantucket basketweaving.
