PIN2026 Final Presentation: Looking for New Guinea...the Hunt Continues
Preservation Institute Nantucket is pleased to invite you to their PIN2026 final presentation for their project "Looking for New Guinea...the Hunt Continues," Friday, August 7, from 10-12:00 at Sherburne Hall (11 Center Street, 2nd Floor).
Last summer their students undertook deed and archival research for 365 properties in the West Monomoy/ New Guinea/ New Town area, assisting with their CPC grant-funded project, the West Monomoy Survey. This summer, their students have spent nine weeks continuing the research, with a specific goal of finding early (1770s-1850s) Black-owned properties in the New Guinea area. Research questions include: Where exactly was the original New Guinea neighborhood? How many early Black-owned homes still exist? What evidence supports the existence of New Guinea families on Nantucket after the 1850s fall of whaling?

Nantucket Preservation Institute are proud to have been granted a Phase 2 of CPC funding, in partnership with the Town, to finalize the research of this area over the next two years. They are always interested in oral histories, visiting the inside of historic homes, and just having a conversation to get to know the local residents and learn more about your neighborhood and home.
