The Myth of the Black Whaleman with Dr. Kayci Merritte

American whaling is often remembered with nostalgia, despite its ecological destruction and the dangerous conditions endured by those who worked at sea. This talk explores the myths that have cast the industry as a place of diversity, meritocracy, and opportunity for Black whalemen. Through a closer look at life aboard whaling ships and the experiences of African Americans in the industry, Dr. Kayci Merritte also considers slavery as the historical backdrop that shaped these claims of freedom and possibility.
