WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

The 'Haul Over' refers to an area of the eastern side of Nantucket Island, North of Wauwinet and south of Coskata-Coatue Wildlife refuge. From at least the early 1800's until the mid 1900's, the fishermen of Nantucket would pull their boats from the harbor and 'Haul' them 'Over' this narrow spit of beach in order to reach the more fertile fishing grounds to the east and south of the island, without navigating out of the harbor and all the way around Great Point. In our eyes, this is the perfect representation of New England ingenuity and rugged determination that it requires to live on a place 30 miles out to sea in the Atlantic Ocean.
