About the Role
The Director of Development & Marketing is a senior leader on the Fairwinds team and is responsible for bringing creativity, strategy, and energy to fundraising and marketing efforts that raise ~$2M annually in charitable giving. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of growing revenue through major gifts, events, and campaigns, and will thrive in a community-driven environment.

The Director will play a central role in deepening community investment and shaping the next phase of growth for an organization that is improving, and saving, lives every day.
About Fairwinds
Fairwinds is Nantucket’s leading mental health provider, offering a full spectrum of behavioral health services regardless of ability to pay. The organization has recently doubled in size and expanded services, marking an exciting new chapter for the island’s mental health system.
As Nantucket’s state-designated Community Behavioral Health Center, Fairwinds provides outpatient care, psychiatry, 24/7 crisis response, and wraparound services in close partnership with Nantucket Cottage Hospital, the Nantucket Public School, the Town, and local public safety agencies.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
Fundraising & Donor Relations
- Lead and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy with a ~$2M annual goal.
- Manage a portfolio of ~80 major donor prospects and steward relationships with at least 6 quality contacts per year.
- Partner with the Executive Director on cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
- Develop sponsorship opportunities and manage solicitation for events including but not limited to Fairwinds in Bloom.
- Staff the Development and Events Committees of the Board.
- Supervise the Development Manager in gift entry, CRM (DonorPerfect), acknowledgments, reporting, appeals, and event support.
- Manage grants portfolio including research, proposals, and reporting.
- Plan and host donor cultivation events on/off island; travel to meet donors during winter/spring.
- Create donor engagement tools (opportunity menu, recognition/benefits matrix).
- Track and report fundraising progress; prepare annual fundraising plans focused on ROI.
Marketing, Communications & Public Relations
- Develop and implement strategies to reach key audiences: donors, stakeholders, and help-seekers.
- Lead storytelling and digital content creation to build awareness and inspire giving.
- Oversee external communications, media requests, public statements, and brand voice.
- Draft donor communications including appeals, reports, and acknowledgments.
- Guide social media strategy and ensure brand fidelity across platforms.
- Manage marketing consultants and budget to maximize reach and results.
Finance & Operations
- Oversee development and marketing budgets; forecast and track revenue/expenses.
- Collaborate with accounting to ensure accurate reporting and compliance.
- Prioritize tactics based on ROI and invest in strategies that drive sustainable revenue.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, development, or communications.
- Demonstrated success in meeting ambitious fundraising goals.
- Experience managing major donor portfolios and leading events.
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Leadership experience with staff, consultants, or volunteers.
- Willingness to work on Nantucket in an in-person or hybrid schedule. Regular on-island presence is an essential function of this role.
- Ability to travel in the U.S. to meet donors.
- Excellent project management, organizational, and critical-thinking skills.
Desired Skills
- Familiarity with DonorPerfect or similar CRMs.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and MailChimp a plus.
- Experience in mental health, Nantucket community, or local philanthropy preferred.
- Creative approach to donor engagement (giving circles, junior ambassadors, etc.).
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $90,000–$110,000 annually, with opportunity for performance bonus.
