Director of Finance

POSITION SUMMARY:

 
Under the guidance of the Executive Director (ED)/CEO, the Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing financial statements, preparing reports, managing cash flow, and handling general accounting functions for Fairwinds. This role involves establishing and maintaining robust internal controls and acting as the main liaison with external auditors. The Director also supervises personnel involved in Revenue Cycle Management, Billing, Accounting, and Bookkeeping, while continuously assessing service status and planning activities to address evolving needs. Upholding high ethical and professional standards within the department is paramount.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
 
  • Financial Leadership: Direct and manage all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting, ensuring alignment with Fairwinds' strategic goals. Maintain the general ledger and manage the monthly closing process to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP.
  • Internal Controls: Develop and maintain effective internal control systems to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Audit Coordination: Serve as the primary contact for external auditors, facilitating audit processes and ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. Manage the year-end audit process and lead the annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Team Oversight: Provide leadership and guidance to the finance team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. Directly manage the daily activities of the Accounting Bookkeeper and coordinate with outsourced vendors in finance and accounting, covering AP, AR, GL, and Financial Analytics.
  • Financial Analysis: Conduct thorough financial analyses to inform strategic decision-making and identify opportunities for cost savings and revenue enhancement. Ensure all accounts are regularly reconciled and financial adjustments are calculated and posted as needed.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Prepare and present financial reports to senior management and stakeholders, ensuring transparency and clarity in financial matters.
  • Policy Development: Collaborate with leadership to develop financial policies and procedures that support operational efficiency and compliance.
  • Performance Management: Ensure completion of performance evaluations for direct reports and manage staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage.
 
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; MBA/CPA preferred.
  • At least 7-10 years of accounting experience, including 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong accounting and financial analytical skills and the ability to maintain financial operational systems.
  • Broad knowledge of healthcare and/or nonprofit operating activities.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
 
SKILLS AND ABILITIES QUALIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • Knowledge of community mental health resources on Nantucket and neighboring communities preferred.
  • Knowledge of pluralism and diversity to work effectively with all people required.
  • Ability to assess organizational needs, social and self-care required.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and use team resources/supervision to enhance performance.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required, including ability to establish constructive working relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills required.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in the application of policies and procedures required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required, including strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage and prioritize multiple, often competing, priorities.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills required, including ability to work effectively in crisis situations.
  • Excellent judgment with the ability to independently solve problems and make decisions with little or no need for direct supervision.
  • Current, valid driver's license in state of residence and acceptable driving record required.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Professional office environment with travel to community locations on a regular basis.
  • Flexibility to work after hours as needed.
  • Sits at a desk for extended periods of time and performs long hours of work sitting at a computer.
  • Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity for computer keyboarding and office equipment use.
  • Visual ability to review detailed schedules and information.
  • Physical ability to move around office area repeatedly throughout the day.


This position will report to the Executive Director

Salary Range: $100,000 to $120,000
